Symbiotic Earth führt in die wesentlichen Erkenntnisse der amerikanischen Wissenschaftlerin und Biologin Lynn Margulis (1938 - 2011) und deren Kampf um die Anerkennung ihrer Forschung ein. In den 1960er Jahren stellte Margulis die Symbiose, also das Zusammenleben von Lebewesen verschiedener Art zu beidseitigem Nutzen, als Schlüsselelement der Evolution vor: Entgegen der Ansicht, dass sich das Leben durch zufällige genetische Mutationen und Konkurrenz entwickelt hat, zeigt Lynn Margulis das Narrativ eines symbiotischen Systems auf, in dem sich Bakterien verbinden, um Zellen zu schaffen, aus denen die Organismen des Lebens entstehen. Ihre Thesen stießen bei den Vertreter*innen der neodarwinistischen Auslegung der Evolutionstheorie zunächst auf große Kritik. Heute gilt die von Margulis beschriebene Symbiogenese jedoch als anerkannt und ist zusammen mit dem Darwinismus und dem Gentransfer eine der drei wesentlichen Theorien zur Entwicklung unterschiedlicher Lebensformen.

 

Unter der Regie von John Feldman kommen in dem Dokumentarfilm aus dem Jahr 2017 internationale Wissenschaftler*innen zu Wort, die, wie Lynn Margulis, wegbereitend in ihrem Forschungsfeld waren. In dieser Verknüpfung erforscht der Film Symbiotic Earth - How Lynn Margulis rocked the boat and started a scientific revolution sowohl Leben und Arbeit von Lynn Margulis als auch die Verbundenheit der Lebewesen als Grundprinzip des Lebens auf der Erde.

 

Auf Einladung der Hochschulprogramme LEONARDO – Zentrum für Kreativität und Innovation sowie Kunst – Transfer – Praxis wird „Symbiotic Earth“ von John Feldman im Rahmen von Shift Film gezeigt. Die Screening-Reihe präsentiert Filme, die im direkten Zusammenhang mit der namensgebenden Veranstaltungsreihe Shift stehen. Die nächste Ausgabe Shift #4: Technoökologische Zukünfte findet am 17. Juli um 18 Uhr statt.
