Since the beginning of the millennium, the term “intericonicity” has been used to describe a framework theory that describes the relationship between images and other images by applying theories of intertextuality to images. The popularity of the term led to its inclusion in technical jargon and specialized dictionaries and its establishment in interdisciplinary contexts, but without it being backed up by theoretical concepts in art history.
In this book, Manuela Bünzow presents the first systematic theory of intericonicity. It is developed decisively and consistently from image discourses and practices. It starts with ontological and epistemological foundations that require a completely new awareness of problems and methods.
