On 19 & 20 September and on 26 & 27 September 2026, Buchbach in Upper Bavaria will become a temporary venue for contemporary art. Private garages will be transformed into unusual art spaces, showcasing works by artists from Germany and abroad.

This year’s Garagen Biennale is being organised by, amongst others, AdBK graduates Claudia Holzinger and Laura Kniesel.

The Garagen Biennale combines contemporary art with a unique location and aims to deliberately take art out of traditional exhibition spaces and into the countryside. For two weekends, private spaces will become temporary exhibition venues, thereby opening up a dialogue about alternative forms of art presentation as well as the relationship between art, everyday life, architecture and public space.

The aim is to make art visible outside cities and to strengthen rural areas as important venues for contemporary artistic practices.
The result is a decentralised exhibition route featuring solo and group exhibitions, performances, site-specific installations and discussion forums. The use of garages provides direct and accessible entry to art and facilitates personal encounters between artists and the public.
The Biennale showcases a broad spectrum of contemporary art – from painting, drawing and sculpture to performance, sound and digital media. Key themes include the connection between art and everyday life, the activation of existing spaces, and the question of how participation and shared artistic experiences can be fostered.
Through a curated programme, educational initiatives and fair fees, the Garagen Biennale promotes artistic exchange, regional networking and the sustainable strengthening of the art scene in rural areas.

The Buchbach Garage Biennale is organised by Claudia Holzinger, Jonah Gebka, Laura Kniesel and Laura Osbild.

Claudia Holzinger (born in Vilsbiburg in 1985) is an artist, photographer and graphic designer based in Buchbach and Vienna. She studied graphic design under Prof. Holger Felten and Prof. Friederike Girst, and photography under Prof. Juergen Teller at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg and at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, where she has been working as an assistant since 2022.

Laura Michèle Kniesel (born in Ingolstadt in 1991) lives and works as an artist in Nuremberg. She studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg (2019–2025) under Prof. Katja Eydel, having previously completed a degree in design at TH Nuremberg (B.A.).
