Voisinage

A joint project between the Centre Franco-Allemand de Provence, the AdBK Nuremberg and the ESAAIx

A good neighbourhood is more than just the chance proximity of different people. It arises where people meet, share spaces and strike up conversations with one another. Building on this idea, the illustrators Joëlle Jolivet (France) and Katrin Stangl (Germany) worked in tandem to lead a joint workshop with fifteen students from the École Supérieure d’Art d’Aix-en-Provence and the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts, under the supervision of Prof. Friederike Girst.

The project was conceived as a space for dialogue, exchange and artistic exploration of printmaking and linocut. The students also received excellent support from Steve Viezens, head of the printmaking workshops at the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts

The work carried out in German-French tandems resulted in an exhibition that demonstrates how collaboration gives rise to a shared artistic practice in which a common visual language develops. A German-French art project. For the students, it was an invitation to reflect on places of coexistence: on everyday spaces that connect people, on shared paths and the subtle transitions between closeness and distance. By superimposing shapes and colours, their illustrations explore familiar yet often overlooked places and reveal different experiences of a shared environment.

The exhibition is complemented by a photographic record of the workshop. The photographs were taken and documented by Prof. Jürgen Nefzger, who teaches photography at the École Supérieure d’Art d’Aix.

Voisinage is a joint project of the Centre Franco-Allemand de Provence, the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts and the École Supérieure d’Art d’Aix-en-Provence Félix Ciccolini. The works were exhibited as part of the Biennale d’Aix 2026. In partnership with the Rencontres du 9e Art and the Office de Tourisme d’Aix-en-Provence. The exhibition is made possible thanks to the kind support of the Curt Wills Foundation and the Franco-German Cultural Institute.
