Art Education

High School Art Education

The art education program at the AdBK Nuremberg is characterized by an in-depth exploration of contemporary artistic processes and their social responsibility. Through theoretical analyses and practical applications of these phenomena, students reflect — both individually and collectively — on the intersection of art and education. Artistic work in the studio and the realization of exhibitions, publications, and interdisciplinary projects in the classroom provide space for the development of an independent artistic perspective. This professional development is intended to serve as a foundation for future teaching, enabling instructors to sustainably foster creative processes in high school art classes and guide students toward a reflective and independent engagement with artistic themes.

Teacher Certification in Art for High Schools (as a Double Major)

At the AdBK Nuremberg, the teacher certification program for high schools in the subject of art can be completed as a double major. The focus is largely on specialized training in the arts, meaning no additional minor is required. After the standard period of study of 9 semesters, the program concludes with the First State Examination, which qualifies graduates for the subsequent teaching internship (Referendariat) at high schools.

The teacher training program can be completed in any of the open classes and consists of two core areas:

Subject-Specific Studies (235 ECTS): This component is completed at the AdBK in one of the artistic classes. Here, the emphasis is on an intensive engagement with one’s own artistic practice and its interconnection with the students’ approach to art education. In addition to artistic work in the class, the specialized studies component requires students to take courses in art history, subject-specific pedagogy (including internships), digital media, applied disciplines, artistic workshops, and the elective-required area.

Educational Studies (35 ECTS): This component is completed at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg and covers the pedagogical and psychological foundations relevant to school instruction.

Qualification Program Teacher Certification in Art for High Schools

Starting in the 2024/25 winter semester, the Academy offers a condensed version of the degree program for visual artists in addition to the regular art education program. This qualification program prepares students within five semesters for the first state examination required to teach art as a subject at high schools.
The admission requirement for the qualification program is proof of a completed degree in fine arts or visual arts from a domestic or international art college or academy, which must have been obtained no more than 10 years ago.
