What is pictorial thinking?

How and through what do pictures work?

How can/should one analyze, discuss and evaluate images?

What and how does my colleague see?

How do I compare images in my head and in front of my nose?

What are the parameters for artistic experiments?

Is (my) visual memory stable?

Are there conditions for free art?

Do artists have different ideas of norms and values?

Are we all creators of culture?

How can you sharpen and expand your perception?

How can I become rich and famous quickly?

Is it good to work near a forest?

Does everything here always have to be new, original and useful?

The teaching of General Design Fundamentals in the Department of Liberal Arts aims to give first-year students a broad subject-specific orientation and offers a program that spans classes and media.

Lectures are held (almost) every Monday during the winter semester. Here, a variety of works by (mainly) contemporary artists are shown in order to get to know different strategies and solution models, to get an overview of requirements, conditions of freelance work and to take a more differentiated and closer look at individual phases of artistic productions and creative processes (e.g. design, research, collection, presentation etc.). The lectures should - besides orientation, knowledge acquisition and source of inspiration - also be provocation to discuss general and fundamental questions of art, culture and education controversially.

At the beginning of the winter semester, practical tasks and exercises are assigned with a focus on conception and design. In addition, each student is expected to develop an annual project and complete it by the end of the 2nd semester. For the continuous development of the tasks and the annual project, regular meetings are held in smaller, mixed-class groups, where the individual work and processes are presented and discussed.

In the first year of study, a room is available for all students of the basic class, which can be used as a common studio and for presentations (e.g. of the annual exhibition).

A workshop lasting several days - usually as an accompanying block seminar to the annual project - takes place (usually) at the beginning of the summer semester.

Participation in the design fundamentals courses is mandatory for all first-year students and concludes with an exam and presentation at the end of the 2nd semester.

Artistic Classes

first cycle and postgraduate programmes

Studies at AdBK Nuremberg are organized in a class structure that unites all students regardless of the semesters they have already completed. The permeable class structures allow students to develop freely and independently within the framework of the academic teaching. In open discourse, the students' created works are reviewed and discussed at regular class meetings.

In the field of fine arts with a focus on liberal arts, the disciplines at the AdBK Nuremberg are divided into ten artistic classes, which are led by a professor.

The study of fine arts with a focus on jewelry and device or graphic design / communication design can each be completed in one class. The teacher training program in art at the Gymnasium can be completed in all free classes.

With postgraduate master's program „Live Art Forms“ the AdBK offers further education, which is aimed at interested parties who have already completed their studies.
