Framing the Freakazoid: Doing-By-Doing (DBD)
Through various strategic exercises, rituals and actions some geared to individual student needs and interests in a communal class environment, the lure and lore of the freak will be harnessed for its outsider power and mined for rich territories of insight and creativity. Surveying a plethora of freaks and über freaks from musicians George Clinton, Rick “Superfreak” James, Little Richard, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Grace Jones, and Goddess Bunny. All Uncle Fishhook middleclassim and speissig pasty prissyness will be vanquished forever to make room for a giddy Hellzapoppin where the Maladusted Rule!
As a subset tie-in to the empowerment of the freakazoid there will be film screenings, spirited discussion circles, and specialized reading materials from Miss Davis personal collection of independent and experimental texts, magazines and queer zines along with hands-on workshops that blossom in a final class project. Coming from a wholeheartedly belief that performance isn't something that you can teach and in the spirit of Doing-by-Doing (DBD) our time will be facilitated as an intense art boot camp combined with an earthy Gertrude Stein style Tender Buttons Salon. Ideas and concepts are shared and shaped in a spirit of camaraderie, generosity and above all mutual respect and loving care. Come by if forming a DIY super post modern art band, deconstructing your damage and vocalizations through stylized spoken word, fractured chanting or glossolalia could be your thing!
